Why Networking Matters
Based on my experience and observation working in HR, networking can really help open opportunities.
When you build connections while you are still a student, you are actually creating extra paths for your future career.
Today, I see how recommendations work a lot in real hiring situations.
Let me share some examples.
Example From My Workplace
Sometimes we receive intern profiles from higher management.
These profiles are not random. They come from people they know.
For example:
A manager may know a student through their network or personal connection
They share the student's CV with HR and ask if we can consider them for an internship
Another example is during career fairs.
There was a student that one of our senior leaders met during a career fair. After the event, the student's profile was shared in our HR group to see if any department wanted to accept her as an intern.
You see how simple it can be?
One meeting. One connection. One recommendation.
Sometimes that is all it takes.
What Students Can Do
As a student, try to socialize in events where you can meet professionals.
This can include:
Career fairs
University events
Industry talks
Professional seminars
When you meet someone:
Introduce yourself politely
Tell them you are a student
Share your interest in learning about the industry
You can also:
Ask for their name
Exchange contacts or business cards
Stay connected through platforms like LinkedIn
You Never Know When It Will Help
Networking is not about asking for a job immediately.
It is about building relationships early.
You may not need those connections today. But one day, when you are looking for an internship or job, those connections may remember you.
And sometimes, opportunities come simply because someone shared your profile or recommended you.
Final Thought
If you are a student reading this, I want to tell you something I wish I understood earlier:
Don’t wait until graduation to start networking.
Start while you are still a student.
Meet people. Introduce yourself. Stay connected.
You will never know when an opportunity might come from those connections.
