How Long Does the Visa and Relocation Process Usually Take?

If you’ve been offered a job in Dubai from overseas, you might be thinking:

“Great… but when can I actually move?”

And this is a very important question.

Once you receive your job offer, there are usually several steps that need to happen before you can officially start working — including the employment visa and work permit process, depending on your situation.

So, how long does it take?

Honestly, there isn’t one exact timeline I can give you.

It can vary depending on the company, the required documents, government processing, your current location, and whether anything needs to be corrected or submitted again.

That’s why I wouldn’t recommend booking your flight or making major relocation arrangements just because you’ve received a job offer.

Instead, ask HR:

“Could you please give me an estimated timeline for the visa and relocation process, and when you expect me to be able to join?”

This gives you a much better idea of what to expect.

And if you’re currently outside the UAE, you can also ask whether there’s anything you need to prepare in advance — such as passport documents, certificates, medical requirements, or other paperwork.

One thing I always tell candidates:

Don’t panic if the process takes longer than you expected.

A delay doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong with your application or your job offer. Sometimes these processes simply take time.

Your best friend during this stage is communication.

Stay in touch with HR, ask when you’re unsure, and make sure you understand what happens next.

Because getting the job is exciting — but knowing when you can actually pack your bags and start your new life in Dubai is just as important.

And if you’re currently going through this process or planning your move to the UAE, come join me in Little Corner Thoughts’ YouTube Community. You can ask your questions there and connect with others who may be going through the same journey.
