How Do I Know Which Career Path Is Right for Me?

One of the questions I hear from students is:

“How do I know which career path is right for me?”

And honestly?

You might not know yet.

And that's okay.

I think we sometimes put too much pressure on university students to have everything figured out.

You choose a degree, and suddenly people start asking:

“So, what are you going to do after graduation?”

And you're thinking...

“I have no idea.” 😅

Maybe you're studying in Dubai, away from your family and your home country. Maybe you've been trying to make your parents proud, do well in university, and build a future for yourself.

So, the thought of choosing the wrong career can feel scary.

But here's something I've learned from working in HR and watching people build their careers:

Your first job does not have to be your forever job.

I've seen people start in one role and eventually move into completely different positions. I've seen people begin at entry level and grow into supervisors, managers, and leaders.

Sometimes, they didn't even know that was where they were heading when they started.

They simply took the next opportunity.

Start with curiosity, not pressure

Instead of asking yourself:

“What career should I choose for the rest of my life?”

Try asking:

“What am I curious about?”

Do you enjoy working with people?

Do you like organizing things?

Are you good at solving problems?

Do you enjoy creating?

Do people often come to you for advice?

Do you like making people feel comfortable?

These little things can give you clues.

You don't have to find one magical career that you're “meant” to do.

Sometimes you discover what you're good at by actually doing things.

Your first job can be an experiment

This is something I wish more students knew.

Your first job doesn't need to be perfect.

It can simply be your opportunity to learn.

You might take a job and realize:

“Oh, I actually love this.”

Or maybe:

“Okay... this is definitely not for me.” 😂

Both are useful discoveries.

Knowing what you don't enjoy is also part of figuring out what you want.

So don't be afraid of trying something just because it wasn't part of your original plan.

And please don't compare your timeline

This is especially difficult when you're a student.

You see someone getting an internship.

Someone else gets a job before graduation.

Another person seems to already have their entire career planned.

And you start thinking:

“Am I behind?”

No.

You're simply on your own timeline.

I've seen careers develop in so many different ways. Some people know exactly what they want early. Others take a few wrong turns before finding something that feels right.

There is no single timeline for success.

So, what should you do?

If you're confused right now, don't try to figure out your entire life.

Just focus on your next step.

Talk to someone working in a field you're interested in.

Apply for an internship.

Try something new.

Ask questions.

Pay attention to what makes you excited—and what doesn't.

Because sometimes, clarity doesn't come before you start.

Sometimes, clarity comes because you start.

And if you're still figuring it out?

That's okay.

You're not behind.

You're learning.

You're growing.

And your career doesn't have to be perfectly planned to become something you're proud of.

Just take the next step.

You can figure out the rest along the way.
